Castles can be described as fortified structures that were built during Middle Ages in Middle East and Europe. These structures are very large. Normally, they are bordered by a wall or some such thing that demarcates the land of castle and main building from external or outer land. Some of the castles have various interesting facts attached to them.
Normally, staircases were spiral in almost every castle. The reason behind this was that in case of any attack from an army, the defenders could take positions in the upper area of castle and when the enemy takes staircases; they were largely exposed to the defenders. This advantage was immense and served as a major feature of castle. The longest siege was suffered by Donnington Castle. The period was from mid 1644 to April 1646.
For constructing Lincoln castle, approximately 165 houses were destroyed. One of the interesting facts is about the very famous Dracula. The story of Count Dracula was written by Bram Stoker when he was staying at Slains Castle. Since the Scottish weather was very inhospitable, the writer could not get out of the castle and was actually ‘confined’ inside. The environment inside castle was scary and this was what inspired Stoker to write this award-winning bestseller of all times.
Like this, there have been many other castles and interesting facts attached to almost each of them. A few of them are also known to be haunted but nothing has solid proofs. Yet, castles were and remain to be big mysteries.
